History Of Ships

The first specialised bulk carrier ship was born in 1852, leading to a new era in the shipping segment. There are wide ranges of ships today, from single-hold mini-bulk carriers to high capacity careers like mammoth ore ships. Today, bulk carriers comprise more than 21% of merchant fleets globally. Though half of the bulk carriers belong to the Chinese and Japanese, 82% of these ships were built in Asia

Before bulk carriers were built, shippers had only two ways to move their bulk goods, either by longshoremen or with a crane but both the options were slow and labour intensive. The specialised bulk carriers were introduced in this space and made a benchmark in the merchant segment.

These kinds of cargos are very opaque, caustic or abrasive. So, a large hatchway for the bulk carrier was required for efficient cargo handling and safe transit, which led to the development of bulk carrier ships
